Steve Hewlett

Steve Hewlett is a Guardian columnist and broadcasting consultant whose clients have included Tiger Aspect, Guardian Media Group, Ofcom, Channel 4 and BSkyB.

He also runs TV production company Big Pictures and is visiting Professor of Journalism and Broadcast policy at Salford University. He is a regular contributor to and presenter of programmes on Radio 4 and Five Live and now hosts Radio 4’s weekly Media Show.

Steve has worked as a researcher, producer and executive editor for the BBC and Channel 4, specialising in factual and current affairs programmes such as Inside Story and Rough Justice. After spending three years as Editor of current affairs flagship Panorama - for which he won numerous national and international awards including the RTS’ Interview of the Year and a TV BAFTA - Steve took over as Director of Programmes at Carlton TV, having previously been Head of Factual Programmes and Features at Channel 4. He became Managing Director of Carlton Productions in 2001 with responsibility for shows such as Planet 24 and Action Time. He left ITV at the time of the Granada/Carlton merger in 2003.

During the course of his career, Steve has met and interviewed Colonel Ghadaffi, gone in search of the man who shot the Pope and spent 10 weeks locked in the Maze prison in Northern Ireland whilst making a film about the IRA and their loyalist counterparts with unprecedented access – amongst other things.

He is the Chair of DocFest – the Sheffield International Documentary festival, a board member at Screen Yorkshire and a fellow of the Royal Television Society.

Steve is an expert facilitator and speaker on Corporate Strategy and Business Management and has spoken to a variety of different industries, including Skillset, the Institute of Chartered Accountants and Ofcom. His keynote speeches include two specialist areas: how businesses need to evolve as they grow / managing change and company evolution; and ‘Media Meltdown’: will today’s economic climate impact on the media – and if so, how? He is also a consummate after dinner speaker, who talks with humour and insight, about life in the media spotlight, including the time he oversaw the candid and highly publicized Panorama interview with Princess Diana.
